Bryan Baker, DO

  • Name: Bryan Baker, DO
  • Medical school you attended/year you graduated: Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. Graduated 2017.
  • Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)
  • Program director: Michael Weaver, DO

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC? Four years. I started my fourth year (last year) of residency in July 2020, but this will be my third year at UNMC. I did my internship at Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital Transitional Year Residency from 2017-2018.

What do you like the most about your training program? We have excellent exposure to a wide variety of complex patients with ample opportunities to become well-trained physiatrists. We have enthusiastic attendings who are continuing to grow the program and establish an excellent foundation for the future.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future There is a physician shortage in the country. At the same time, there are now more student applicants than residency positions for graduating medical students. This combination, along with declining reimbursement rates and increasing costs of education for physicians, I believe is not sustainable. There needs to be a sustainable plan in place to increase resident education and financial opportunities to meet the demands of graduating medical students.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • I was the chief resident of TY internship and current chief resident of our PM&R residency.
  • Balancing my role as a resident, husband, and father of three during residency.
  • I will be doing a fellowship in interventional spine and musculoskeletal medicine at the Cleveland clinic starting July 2021.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I played college tennis in Hawaii.
  • I enjoy road and mountain biking (more road biking now that I live in the Midwest).
  • I enjoy both snow skiing and snowboarding and have been doing both since I was a little kid.
