The UNMC College of Medicine faculty received 17 new grant awards representing $3.1 million in new funding in the month of May.
- David Anderson, PhD, ophthalmology and visual sciences, received a $49,786 grant from Nebraska DHHS for mapping visual pathway degeneration in a murine model of chemotherapy-related neurotoxicity.
- Steven Caplan, PhD, biochemistry and molecular biology, was awarded $303,102 from the Department of Health and Human Services/National Institutes of Health to study vesicular transport mechanisms in centrosome regulation and ciliogenesis.
- Vishal Kothari, MD, surgery-general surgery, received $30,000 from the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons for the study “Feasibility of bisphosphonate use on sleeve gastrectomy associated bone loss — Healthy body, healthy bones trial.”
- Russell McColloh, MD, pediatrics-hospitalists, received $192,643 from Duke University to study pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and safety profile of understudied drugs administered to children per standard of care.
- Thomas Porter, MD, internal medicine-cardiovascular, was awarded $769,026 from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study scar detection and treatment with droplet activation.
- Matthew Rizzo, MD, neurological sciences, received an $813,746 grant from the National Institute on Aging to monitor real-world driver behavior for classification and early prediction of Alzheimer’s disease.
- John Shepherd, MD, ophthalmology and visual sciences, received a $34,868 grant from the University of California-Los Angels for the project “Beacon sensors and telerehabilitation to assess and improve use of devices for visual functioning.”
- Grant Turner, MD, internal medicine-pulmonary, was awarded $5,000 from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to study evaluation of chest wall binding in transgender men by pulmonary function testing.
Industry-sponsored grants and contracts:

- Paul Fey, PhD, pathology/microbiology, received funding for the testing of archived SARS-CoV-2 specimens for evaluation of molecular diagnostic devices.
- Hani Haider, PhD, orthopaedic surgery, was awarded funding for the characterization of UHMWPE wear in dual mobility total hip replacements under normal and abrasive conditions; implant specimen preparation and in vitro wear durability study of a carbon fiber reinforced total knee replacement system; and pin-on-disk UHMWPE wear comparison studies with two types of titanium orthopaedic metal alloys.
- Matthew Lunning, DO, internal medicine-oncology/hematology, has been awarded funds for a phase 2 study of Venetoclax with safety lead-in for treatment of relapsed/refractory mature T-cell lymphomas.
- Joshua Santarpia, PhD, pathology/microbiology, received funding for a negative pressure container study.
- Alicia Schiller, PhD, anesthesiology, has been awarded a grant to study the effect of surgical and catheter-based renal denervation on renal sympathetic vasomotion in swine.
- Tammy Wichman, MD, internal medicine-pulmonary, will study the effects of SELExipag in inoperable or persistent/recurrent chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
- Ronald Zolty, MD, PhD, internal medicine-cardiovascular, has been awarded a grant for a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled, multicenter study to assess the effect of Omecamtiv Mecarbil on exercise capacity in subjects with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and decreased exercise tolerance.
