CRNA Emily Glaser was nominated by her peers and selected by department leaders as this year’s Extraordinary Nurse from the Department of Anesthesiology.
In typical years, Nebraska Medicine celebrates Nurse’s Week with a ceremony that honors nurses across the institution with accolades. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that ceremony has been postponed until August 5, 2020.
Glaser joined UNMC in 2011 after earning masters and doctoral nursing degrees from the University of Iowa. She has chaired the CRNA Education Committee for the past four years, ensuring student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) learn the skills they need to become safe and caring clinicians.
Nominators and supervisors touted her success with SRNAs, noting that her contributions likely influenced some students to pursue employment with Nebraska Medicine. Additionally, Glaser revised both new student onboarding and daily clinical assessment processes for SRNAs, ensuring students had an abundance of tools for success. Additionally, Glaser enhanced the staff CRNA onboarding process.
Glaser’s supervisors referred to her as a "wizard with EPIC’s charting system," and noted that colleagues often seek her out to gain knowledge on the system, along with our organization and standard of care processes. In 2018, she was involved in research with the Council on Accreditation (COA) of nurse anesthesia educational programs, where she helped develop a comprehensive, standardized and valid clinical assessment instrument. She also participated in a longitudinal study from Harvard examining health and wellness in nurses.
Above all, colleagues reported that Glaser is exceptionally kind and compassionate to both her patients and colleagues.
Read testimonials from her supervisors:
"In addition to Emily being a bright CRNA academically, she also has a very bright personality. I have never seen her be anything other than positive and upbeat. In her role as SRNA coordinator, she has mentored some students through difficult waters and challenging times. I know some students have been successful because of Emily’s suggestions, mentoring, and gentle pushes. She engages people and genuinely cares about them." – Tim Glidden, director of nurse anesthesia
"Emily embodies what we hope for in regard to an informal leader. She is very professional in all of her interactions and truly leads by example. It is part of Emily’s nature to ensure that all people are represented in the decision-making process. She certainly improves the work environment on a daily basis with her positive attitude and upbeat personality. She achieves the level of excellence that Nebraska Medicine is proud to showcase as an example of care at the highest standards of safety and quality." – Tiffany Olson, associate director of nurse anesthesia
