Nebraska’s Severe Weather Awareness Week is set this year from March 23-27.
Review family plans
This week also is a good time to review family emergency plans regarding severe weather. Assistance in preparing family emergency plans can be found here.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, a tornado drill that was planned for the week has been canceled.
Despite the cancellation, Severe Weather Awareness Week is a good time to:
- Review the severe weather plan in the emergency preparedness guide, as well as your department’s plan;
- Know what to do and where to go in the event of a tornado warning; and
- Remember always to take the stairs, not the elevator, during a warning.
“The 2019 flooding was a reminder of the dangers of severe weather,” said John Hauser, safety manager for UNMC. “As we enter tornado season, it’s important to be cognizant of the precautions in place and to know how to stay safe in a weather emergency.
“Make sure you registered your cell phone with UNMC Alerts so that it will receive notification of tornado warnings and other campus emergencies alerts,” he said.
UNMC students and staff can verify their UNMC Alerts information or sign up as a new subscriber by following
these instructions.
