Update on faculty teaching and assessment/testing resources

As faculty members switch to remote teaching, here are some strategies and tools that we have identified to make your teaching process seamless and more convenient as well as support secure remote testing.

Scheduling of Zoom within Canvas

Academic Technologies has enabled the “Zoom for Canvas” integration.

Located in every Canvas course navigation, the Zoom link can be used by each faculty member/ teacher to schedule a Zoom video conference.

Why schedule a Zoom meeting from within Canvas?

  • If you already have a Zoom meeting scheduled for your course, you could import the meeting into Canvas
  • Course meetings will automatically appear to all enrollees in the course
  • Meetings scheduled via Canvas also appear as events in Canvas Calendar generating an automatic notification to students
  • Only the meetings scheduled within Canvas course are displayed. Your other professional meetings scheduled outside of Canvas stay out of sight from students.

Echo360 Universal Capture

Automatic downloading of Echo360 Universal Capture enabled

Echo360 Universal Capture is a software used by faculty to capture discrete recording of a presentation with video, audio and content. Once processed, the recording is uploaded to your Canvas course.

Do I Need Workstation Support to Install Echo360 Universal Capture?

No! Faculty using UNMC provided Windows 10 computer can download Echo360 Universal Capture from UNMC’s Software Center WITHOUT having your WorkStation Support individual install the software. Faculty using MAC operating systems can directly install the software.

Secure assessment strategies and resources

Alternate strategies and recommendations for delivery of exams, either remote or locally with social distancing identified.

Information for alternate assessment strategies and recommendations for delivery of exams, either remote or with social distancing, have been posted here.

Faculty are encouraged to review these strategies and utilize methods that work best for their classes.

Are the alternate forms of assessment or remote proctoring as reliable?

The alternate forms of assessment, or remote proctoring in addition to other testing strategies identified, can provide similar levels of confidence that students adequately understand the material, and their work represents their own comprehension and mastery.

Is this the same as using a remote proctoring service using Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

No. At this time, we are not recommending remote proctoring services for several reasons including:

  • The services do not work on mobile devices (including iPads), which may be the only option for some students, especially in programs that extensively use iPads
  • Most services do not integrate with ExamSoft, which is used heavily for exams
  • The services mainly rely on AI for proctoring

Using recommendations in the Assessment Strategies and Resources module can provide as much or more integrity and security as AI proctoring.
