Dr. Hanson to lead division of medical nutrition education

Corrine Hanson, Ph.D., Leuschen Professor for Advancing Research in the Allied Health Sciences in the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions, is the new director for the college’s Division of Medical Nutrition Education.

Glenda Woscyna is stepping down after a 20-year tenure as director. Dr. Hanson assumes the new role April 1.

“Dr. Hanson is an outstanding choice,” said Kyle Meyer, Ph.D., dean of the College of Allied Health Professions. “She is internationally respected in her field, and I am confident she will lead our outstanding program and faculty to even greater successes.

“I want to thank Dr. Betsy Becker and the search committee for their work on behalf of the college.”

Dr. Hanson, a 2018 UNMC Distinguished Scientist, specializes in research focused on nutrition in the developmental origins of disease and respiratory health. She has more than 200 presentations, publications and abstracts, and six book chapters, to her credit. She is principal- or co-investigator on numerous grants, and is currently program director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Nutrition Excellence Initiative.

Dr. Hanson also is well known for teaching and mentoring, and has been recognized with several UNMC honors, including the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award, the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award, and the Outstanding Mentor of Junior Faculty Award.

Dr. Hanson earned her Ph.D. in the UNMC Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area program. She’s served on the UNMC Faculty Senate since 2013, and is its most recent past president.

With Dr. Hanson’s appointment also comes a change in roles within the department. While Dr. Hanson assumes the role of division director, Megan Timmerman, assistant professor of medical nutrition education, will assume duties as clinical nutrition manager and education coordinator.

“I am grateful to Glenda for the remarkable foundation she has built, and to the leadership of CAHP and UNMC who are entrusting me with this role. I am honored and enthused to accept this position and look forward to leading this dynamic division into the future,” Dr. Hanson said.
