CON celebrates Latina Red Dress Heart Healthy event

The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff recently hosted a Latina Red Dress Heart Healthy Event in Gering with the help of a diversity grant from UNMC, drawing about 150 people.

The division collaborated with the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, Platte Valley Bank, First State Bank and numerous in-kind sponsors throughout the community. The event included free health screenings, entertainment by the Guadalupanos Dancers, a healthy meal and talks by Maria Cantu-Hines, M.D., health program manager for the Nebraska Office of Health Disparities and Health Equity and Roberto Dansie, Ph.D., a nationally recognized psychologist and motivation speaker.

“We heard a lot of comments from guests about how much they had learned about their health and that they appreciated attending the event, said Trina Aguirre, Ph.D. “Nursing and dental hygiene students valued the experience of interacting with community clients and especially those from diverse backgrounds who may not speak English.”

Education screenings by faculty and students included mental health and medication reviews by Nancy Meier, D.N.P., UNMC College of Nursing; oral hygiene screenings by Lisa Moravec, UNMC College of Dentistry dental hygiene instructor; and body composition screenings by Wendy Wells, UNMC nursing instructor. The event was organized by Dr. Aguirre and Ann Koehler, UNMC College of Nursing.

Registration now open for second annual NE WOCN Society Conference

UNMC College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education (CON CNE) is excited to host the second Annual Nebraska Affiliate of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing (WOCN) Society Conference, “Pursuit to Excellence: Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Management,” in partnership with the Nebraska affiliate of the WOCN Society.

Registration is now open for the April 17 event, to be held from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., Omaha.

The event will provide nurses across the state and beyond who specialize in the care of WOC needs related issues with targeted training from experts in the field, including some from UNMC and Nebraska Medicine. The topics are chosen based on feedback from attendees of the 2019 inaugural conference. One of the hot topics includes an emphasis on the new Clinical Practice Guideline from the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel’s President, Dr. Janet Cuddigan.

There will be 6.0 nursing contact hours provided.

Certified wound ostomy continence nurses require ongoing specialized knowledge and skills to not only maintain their specialty certification, but to continue to lead the way in providing quality evidence-based care with the intention to overcome these challenges that patients encounter. Third annual Transplant Symposium now accepting registrations

The third annual Transplant Symposium will be held on May 7 at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., Omaha.

The symposium brings together staff from dialysis facilities, transplant centers, organ procurement organizations, and nephrology practices to discuss barriers to patients progressing through transplant evaluation to the waiting list. Nebraska Medicine is collaborating with Qsource-ESRD Network 12, which oversees the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) contract for Network 12, which includes Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. One of hte conference goals is to facilitate communication and understanding between the two “silos” of transplant and dialysis.
