This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC’s 2019 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.
- Name: Aaron Mohs, Ph.D.
- Title: Associate professor, UNMC Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy

Distinguished Scientist
The Distinguished Scientist Award — which is sponsored by the chancellor — recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.
Research focus:
- Imaging and biosensing
The goal of my research is: To develop imaging agents that can be used for multiple applications, including helping to detect and guide removal of cancerous lesions. More recently, we have established a project that uses “ratiometric” fluorophores that detect and identify pathogenic microorganism.
My research will make a difference because: Early detection of disease provides more treatment options and can result in improved outcomes. In our cancer imaging project, we are investigating ways to detect cancer earlier and then, once detected, remove the tumor more completely. Likewise, early and accurate detection of pathogens provides better prediction of optimal therapy. Our goal is to apply this research in low-resource environments.
The best advice I’ve ever been given is: Not from a single quote, but a book of inspirational passages my wife gave me soon after we started dating and before I went to graduate school. I still have it in my office now.
Three things you may not know about me are:
- I love spending time with my wife and children.
- I love to golf when I have the chance.
- I studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria, during college.
Warmest congratulations on your achievement!
