Dr. Fusaro was a former head of dermatology at both UNMC and Creighton University.
“Dr. Fusaro was essential to both the dermatology clinical services and dermatology education for students and residents during his time at UNMC,” said Debra Romberger, M.D., Henry J. Lehnhoff Professor and chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. “He also had a passion for new knowledge and research and generated great questions. For a time, dermatology was a part of the department of internal medicine and he was a valued member of the department.”
“I am saddened by the loss of my friend, colleague, and mentor,” said Kristie Hayes, M.D., associate professor of dermatology. “He was a prolific author, a talented researcher, and was highly esteemed within the dermatology community. He had such an engaging and gregarious personality; every conversation with Dr. Fusaro was memorable, and educational. I will miss his enthusiasm for life, his love for roses, and for dermatology.”
“When my academic office was located on the lower level of Swanson Hall, Dr. Fusaro was situated in an adjacent office,” said Tom Tape, M.D., professor and chief of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Division of General Internal Medicine. “From time to time, he would pop into my office to discuss an interesting scientific article that he had come across in the medical literature. His passion for medical science was wide-ranging and included numerous topics outside of the conventional field of dermatology. His ability to discuss intelligently a wide range of scientific topics never ceased to amaze me. He was a true intellectual raconteur.”
Dr. Fusaro was a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, member of the American Academy of Dermatology and Sigma Xi. He was a contributor of many articles to professional publications of which he was both proud and honored.
A celebration of the life of Dr. Fusaro will be held on March 28 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsmouth. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church.
Peace be on him! Unique mind.
I knew Dr. Fusaro while volunteering with him at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha. He saw patients needing dermatology care there. He allowed me to talk to patients there, gather their history, etc.
I specifically remember a patient who had come thinking he was going to have a colonoscopy that day. He had done the bowel prep, and was hungry and crabby. He was even more angry when he found out it was a dermatology clinic he was scheduled and his colonoscopy was scheduled several days later.
Dr. Fusaro put me in charge of talking to the Gastro department, getting the patient a colonoscopy that day. The patient vehemently assured us. that he wasn't going to go thru that prep again!! That was a learning experience very few students, volunteers etc. could every recreate. He was a wonderful man. I saw his passion for patients, students. Hhe was a wonderful doctor, teacher, but most importantly a kind and gentle man.
