A new coffee spot is coming to Nebraska Medical Center with hopes of opening in May. Sodexo announced plans to construct a full-service Starbucks coffee shop inside the west atrium of the Durham Outpatient Center.
“This will be a fully licensed Starbucks store,” says Tom Hoffman, executive director, Food and Nutrition. “That means customers can participate in the Starbucks customer reward program and use the Starbucks app. All the culinary options and amenities you would find in a Starbucks location will also be offered.”
The coffee shop will be built on the west side of the atrium, near the doors to the parking garage and connector to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Work is set to begin in late February or early March. See the renderings here.
For colleagues who enjoyed visiting the now-closed coffee shop location on level two of the Durham Outpatient Center, it’s expected to be welcome news. That renovated waiting area is now exclusively reserved for patients and families visiting the Heart and Vascular Center.
“We know that was a popular spot for colleagues and visitors,” Hoffman said. “When it closed, leadership asked us to explore the west atrium. We are excited to get this going.”
The atrium’s existing furniture will continue to be used. The security desk will be moved near the vending machines in the area connected to the parking garage.
“During construction, we hope to avoid interruptions to clinic operations,” said Jason Ray, project manager, Facilities Management and Planning.
Colleagues can continue to reserve the space for smaller events.
