Elizabeth Beam, Ph.D., receives 2020 William Rutala Scholarship
Elizabeth Beam, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UNMC College of Nursing, is the recipient of the 2020 William Rutala Scholarship from the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). This award is intended to help support infection control professionals’ scholarly activities in hospital epidemiology. The William Rutala Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of a non-physician interested in the research of healthcare-associated infections. SHEA established this scholarship in honor of Dr. Rutala, a prominent SHEA leader in the field of health care epidemiology research.
Parking payroll deductions to be made ‘pre-tax’
In January 2018, as a result of tax law changes by Congress, payroll deductions for parking at UNMC were switched from a “pre-tax” deduction, which lowers taxable gross income, to a “post-tax” deduction.
This has now been reversed. Tax provisions included in the Dec. 20, 2019, federal government spending bill repeal the “parking tax.” Therefore, effective Feb. 1, university employees who have parking costs automatically deducted from their paychecks will see the deduction being made before payroll taxes are withheld. This means parking costs will once again reduce taxable gross income, and employees’ total take-home pay will go up slightly.
No action is required by employees. Questions can be addressed to the UNMC campus payroll office at 402-559-7460.
Congratulations Beth!
