The Olson Women’s Health Resource Center will begin a hands-on learning series, “Wellness Through Doing: A Series on Hobbies for Mental Health,” with a presentation and guided session on meditation by Steven Wengel, M.D., assistant vice chancellor for campus wellness for UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
“Wellness Through Doing: Meditation” will be held on Jan. 29 from noon-1 p.m. in the Olson Center for Women’s Health classroom on the fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center.
Dr. Wengel will discuss the principles and benefits of meditation. He will provide an overview, answer questions and lead a brief guided meditation session.
“We’ve wanted to provide a hobby-based series of hands-on classes for a while, especially as interest in mental health and wellness has grown,” said Tammy Dawdy, resource associate at the Olson Center. “Engaging with hobbies can reduce stress and improve your mood, while challenging yourself with new skills, and they can improve memory and sharpen the mind. We hope folks across campus will join us to learn to do something new.
“We are all in need of ways to reduce stress and improve our mood,” she said. “We envision that each month we will offer something new. It may be a single session, such as this month’s meditation program or a set of classes meeting for four weeks.
“Unfortunately, we will have to limit participation to a small group.”
