UNMC De-Stress Week kicks off today

It’s Monday, but “donut” stress. You can start your work week off with free donuts. Stop by the Sorrell Center Alumni Commons or the Durham Research Center Commons from 8-10 a.m. for donuts, coffee and juice while supplies last.

At noon, join us for a Brown Bag lecture featuring Sheritta Strong, M.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry, who will be speaking on “The Thrill of Stress and the Roller Coaster of Life.” This event will take place in the Sorrell Center, Room 2014. Goodie bags will be provided to the first 20 in-person attendees. If you’re unable to join in person, you can still view this presentation via Zoom.

Tuesday, Dec. 10

  • Paws for Stress, 11-1 p.m., Sorrell Center Alumni Commons, second floor. Volunteers from Paws for Friendship, a local pet therapy organization will bring dogs to help you unleash some stress.
  • Snack Break: Popcorn Bar, 2-4 p.m., College of Pharmacy, second floor atrium. The Office of Community Engagement encourages you to “pop” on by and enjoy some free popcorn (while supplies last).

Wednesday, Dec. 11

  • Student Snack Break, 10 a.m., student areas in the College of Nursing, Sorrell Center, the College of Pharmacy and the College of Public Health. The library will be providing healthy snacks (while supplies last) for students, so take a quick study break and grab a snack before they’re gone.
  • Yoga, noon-1 p.m., Center for Healthy Living. Students and staff are welcome to take part in a free yoga class sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. The College of Public Health Wellness Council will be providing free stress balls to those who participate.
  • DIY stress balls, 2-4 p.m., Sorrell Center Alumni Commons, second floor. Stop by the Sorrell Center Alumni Commons and create your own stress ball (while supplies last).

Thursday, Dec. 12

  • Chancellor’s Holiday Tea, 2-4 p.m., Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium. Join Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., at this annual holiday event. Free cookies, fruit, veggies and beverages will be provided (while supplies last).

Friday, Dec. 13

  • Holiday Skate Day, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., UNMC Ice Rink. Stop by and sip on some hot chocolate or lace up your skates and take a couple of laps around the rink. There will be a hot chocolate bar and free UNMC swag (while supplies last).

Throughout the Week (Monday-Thursday):

  • Coloring boards will be located on the 2nd floor of the Sorrell Center and the Durham Research Center Commons.
  • A “Student Relaxation Lounge,” located in the Linder Reading Room on the second floor of the Sorrell Center, will feature snacks and stress relief activities (while supplies last).
