As winter nears, tips for staying safe

As winter nears and it begins getting darker earlier, here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Have your car keys out and ready, and check your surroundings before entering your car. Once in your car, lock the doors.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Limit the time spent on your phone and other devices, so you remain vigilant.
  • If you feel you are being followed, abruptly change directions and alert Public Safety.
  • If possible, do not walk alone.
  • If working at night or planning to leave at night, try to find a well-lit area to park.
  • Do not leave purses and valuables visible in your car.
  • Always lock up your work area when you leave.
  • Program Public Safety’s emergency number — 402-559-5555 — in your phone for quick access.
  • Walk quickly, but confidently.
