About curling

Although most people have seen curling in some capacity, few have had the opportunity to try it out themselves. Played with brooms and 40-pound stones made out of a special kind of Scottish granite, curling is likely the most unique recreational activity offered at UNMC. Once a week for six weeks, student and employee teams face off for 30-minute games at the university’s own ice rink in the middle of campus.

UNMC’s intramural curling leagues require absolutely no prior experience, and are an excellent way to blow off some steam after work with co-workers or classmates. Curling is played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, each with a 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and late (7-9 p.m.) league.

About broomball

Imagine a sport that looks like hockey, but without the skates, pads, and fights. In a nutshell, that’s broomball. At UNMC, broomball is played on the ice by two teams of five players with the aim of scoring points by hitting a small ball with a stick, called a broom, into their opponent’s goal. The rules really are that simple, which allows players to focus on the trickier task of maintaining balance and footing while running on the ice in shoes.

Like curling, intramural broomball requires no prior experience. However, broomball is a much more active sport than curling, so participants can expect to get their cardio in for the day. All players are required to wear helmets which are provided every week.

Intramural leagues are open to UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, and University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty, staff, students, retirees, volunteers and their families. Each team is allowed a limited number of non-UNMC/Nebraska Medicine/UNO individuals.
