The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation marked the 50th anniversary of its residency program with a celebration Oct. 17-19.

The event included sessions recounting the early years of the program, advances in orthopaedic surgery over the last five decades, presentations of memorable cases, and lessons learned since residency. Alumni and past and present faculty participated in the panels and served as moderators.
Alumni and guests enjoyed a barbecue dinner with Victor Cruz, former NFL wide receiver and current ESPN analyst. The weekend concluded with a dinner and program at the Omaha Country Club, featuring conservation photographer Michael Forsberg and remarks from alumni.
The UNMC orthopaedic residency program began in 1969 with its first resident, Lowell Niebaum, M.D., a native of Fremont, Neb. More than 170 residents have graduated from the program since its inception. Thirty-four states have former UNMC orthopaedic residents practicing as orthopaedic surgeons.
The orthopaedic residency program continues to be highly competitive, with five residents selected per year from an application pool of more than 600 medical students. Resident involvement in research has steadily increased over the past several years. Since 2013, department residents have been coauthors on nearly 40 articles. Several residents currently play an active role in department grants.
The department will welcome its 200th resident in 2020.
