Each Thursday, we spotlight a medical center employee.
This week, we learn more about:
- Name: Lenal Bottoms
- Hometown: Ralston, Neb.
- No. of years at UNMC: 20
Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I am the administrative program associate for the Asia Pacific Rim Development Program (APRDP), which is under the Office of Global Engagement. My duties include:
- coordinating medical student clinical exchanges and faculty training between UNMC and Chinese partners in Shanghai, Beijing, and other cities;
- being responsible for the China elective program for medical and physician assistant students going to China;
- assisting UNMC and UNO faculty with their China travels;
- coordinating the annual Chinese Cultural Fair on campus; and
- assisting with the International Student Research Forum.
Excellence is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group demonstrating excellence at UNMC.
I see employees practice excellence every day. The example that relates to APRDP is in working with the clinical departments to host our visiting Chinese faculty for a two-month training in medical education. The department chairs are gracious in approving this request. I am consistently told by the departments that they want this to be a good and successful experience for the faculty person. I appreciate their taking the time to ask questions about the training, so they can give the visitors an excellent and fulfilling experience at UNMC. I am very appreciative of their thoroughness.
What is your favorite fall activity?
I like hayrack rides. Being in the fresh air looking at all of the colorful, beautiful foliage relaxes me.
List three things people may not know about you.
- I had my picture taken with Kenny Chesney and Sugarland many years ago.
- I love to travel. This past summer I went to France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. It was an amazing trip. Let me know if you want to see the 1,500 photographs I took.
- My husband and I are now empty nesters (sad face). Our daughter, Allison, is now a freshman at Doane University in Crete, Neb. Now Angel, our miniature schnauzer, gets all the attention.
Thanks for all you do for UNMC's international programs, Lenal. You're a great asset for the medical center.
