New IRB option approved for UNMC researchers

UNMC researchers now have a new option for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review of commercially sponsored research. In addition to the UNMC IRB and Advarra, investigators are now allowed to use Western IRB (WIRB).

A WIRB representative will be on campus on Nov. 4 for two training sessions:

  • Morning session, 10-11:30 a.m.
  • Afternoon session, 1-2:30 p.m.

The training will be held in the Sorrell Center, Room 2010.

If investigators and/or coordinators are unable to make one of these training sessions, the WIRB representative will work with the UNMC Office of Regulatory Affairs to arrange web training at a later date.

To use any central IRB, including WIRB, investigators must have both the Central Institutional Review Board (CIRB) acceptance letter from the office of regulatory affairs, as well as approval from the external IRB. To start the process, investigators must complete the CIRB application in RSS, and satisfy all institutional requirements. This includes, as applicable, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Scientific Review Committee, investigational device committee, Clinical Trial Management System billing grid, coverage analysis, conflict of interest and executed contract.

Call the IRB Office at (402) 559-6463 for more information.
