Because of reduced demand, the University of Nebraska has phased out two employee leave programs created in the wake of this spring’s flooding.
In April, as part of an NU system-wide response to the floods, the university announced a civil leave allowance under which employees could take leave to volunteer in flood recovery efforts. The university also created a catastrophic leave program that allowed employees to receive leave if they needed to attend to personal flood-related matters but had exhausted their vacation leave. Both programs were intended to sunset after several months.
Any unused leave that had been donated to the catastrophic leave program will be proportionally returned to the employee who donated it, per IRS rules.
Members of the university community may still donate to the University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund, created to support students and employees facing financial hardship from crisis situations. Individuals may inquire about applying for assistance from the fund by contacting the emergency fund.
