Charleta Guillory, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, will give the 2019 Berggren Lecture at noon, Oct. 16, in Room 3013, Maurer Center for Public Health. Lunch will be provided for the first 100 attendees.

Dr. Guillory, director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Neonatal-Perinatal Public Health Program, will present “Addressing Disparities in Pre-Term Births in African-American Women: Methods and Results of the Honey Child Project.”
Dr. Guillory is director of Level II Nurseries and the Texas Children’s Hospital Neonatal-Perinatal Public Health Program and a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow. She earned her medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School and completed pediatric residencies at Louisiana State Medical Center and the University of Colorado.
She received her post-doctoral fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and is board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. She received her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Her primary research focus addresses the issue of decreasing black infant mortality and morbidity.
Dr. Guillory served as chair of the March of Dimes State Prematurity Campaign and chair of the March of Dimes State Advocacy and Government Affairs Committee. She presently co-chairs the Texas Pediatric Society (TPS) Fetus and Newborn Committee and serves on the TPS Legislative Committee and the Medical Education Committee. She also serves as a consultant on the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA) Committee of Reproductive, Women’s and Perinatal Health.
Dr. Guillory was one of six physicians nationally to receive the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellows Award from The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences for Outstanding Health Science Professionals. As a recipient of the award, she served as a legislative assistant in the United States Senate (office of Sen. John Breaux D-LA) promoting both health policy legislation and programs.
There also will be a series of roundtable discussions Wednesday and Thursday, in Room 2001 of the Maurer Center for Public Health, in conjunction with the lecture, featuring Dr. Guillory and public health veterans Gretchen Berggren, M.D., and Ruth Berggren, M.D.
- 3-4 p.m., Wednesday: Drs. Ruth and Gretchen Berggren discuss their experiences and careers in addressing public health issues in disadvantaged communities.
- 10:30-11:30 a.m., Thursday: Two College of Public Health faculty members – Abbie Raikes, Ph.D, and David Dzewaltowski, Ph.D., – along with Dr. Gretchen Berggren will discuss career paths for MPH students across concentrations.
