Registration open for Thoracic & GI Oncology Conference

The 14th Annual Fall Midwest Thoracic & GI Oncology Conference will be held Oct. 10 and 11 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., Omaha.

The thoracic session will be held Oct. 10, and the gastrointestinal (GI) oncology session will be held Oct. 11.

At the conclusion of the thoracic session of the conference, the participant should be better able to:

  • Discuss the current issues surrounding the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping.
  • Discuss the current status of lung cancer screening (LCS) in non-smokers and the use of biomarkers in LCS patients.
  • Develop a strategy for managing patients with sarcomatoid carcinoma (pleomorphic carcinoma).
  • Recognize the correlation between radiographic patterns and pathologic findings in thoracic malignancies.
  • Review the current technologies and strategies available for the interventional pulmonologist and their role in the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • Discuss the current role of radiation therapy in early stage NSCLC.
  • Discuss the role of adjuvant chemotherapy following stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
  • Develop a strategy for managing the endocrine, GI and rheumatologic complications of immunotherapy.
  • Assess the data available regarding sub-lobar resections for NSCLC.
  • Discuss strategies for predicting response to check-point inhibitors.

At the conclusion of the GI oncology session of the conference, the participant should be better able to:

  • List the current immunotherapy and systemic therapy available for upper GI malignancy.
  • Explain work up and management of cholangiocarcinoma.
  • Identify the best treatment course for rectal cancer in terms of surgical and radiation options.
  • Identify which patients will need referral to genetics, reproductive medicine, and dietitian.

Continuing education credit is available for conference attendees.
