Guest author Matt McCarthy, M.D., to speak at KANEKO on Oct. 8
The University of Nebraska at Omaha and the KANEKO welcome bestselling author Matt McCarthy, M.D., for the fall season of the new core literary series, “Passages.” Pivoting off of topics from his recent bestseller, “Superbugs,” Dr. McCarthy and a panel of local educators, medical professionals, writers, and ethicists will gather to discuss the writing process, medical ethics and how our public institutions are serving us. The event will be held at the KANEKO, 1111 Jones St., Omaha, on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
The appearance of Dr. McCarthy is underwritten by the UNO College of Arts & Sciences, with assistance from the UNMC Office of Academic Affairs. Additional sponsors include the UNO College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media, and UNO Medical Humanities.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
Nebraska high school girls invited to apply for free orthopedic surgery program
High school girls in 10th through 12th grades with an interest in science, medicine or engineering are invited to apply for the Perry Outreach Program to be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The event is co-sponsored by the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.
The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for female high school students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Participants will hear from women leaders and participate in simulated orthopaedic surgeries and biomechanical experiments.
The application is due Oct. 9, and more information is available here.
“It is a fun-filled educational day of speakers and hands-on modules where the girls get to use saws, drills, screws and get a glimpse into what orthopaedic surgery is like,” said Maegen Wallace, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at UNMC and a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha.
Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, Omaha Metropolitan Healthcare Coalition team for event
The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and the Omaha Metropolitan Healthcare Coalition are teaming for an education day from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Nebraska Medical Center Lower Storz Conference Rooms 1-4. The event is open to individuals who are involved with the coalition, health care providers, emergency response coordinators and anyone who may be required to use emergency preparedness equipment. Students are welcome to attend.
There will be 2.3 nursing contact hours awarded. Nebraska Medicine is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Retirements announced
The UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of 41 retirements between April and September. The list includes seven people with more than 40 years of service and seven other people with more than 30 years of service.
A total of 13 faculty members are on the list, including John Reinhardt, D.D.S., who served as dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry from 2000-2014, and Susan Wilhelm, Ph.D., who served as assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff from 2006-2018.
