Speaker to explore ‘The Second Victim’

Patrice Weiss, M.D.

Patrice Weiss, M.D., will visit UNMC Friday to speak on “The Second Victim: The Effect of Medical Errors on Health Care Providers.”

Dr. Weiss will speak at noon at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Room 0.12.101. The UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is presenting the event.

Dr. Weiss is the executive vice president and chief medical officer at Carilion Clinic and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Va.

She received her medical degree from Hahnemann University (Drexel) School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society. She completed her residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital as well as a fellowship in academic leadership with the Council of University Chairs of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Weiss has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and authored, co-authored, and edited textbooks and textbook chapters. She has been an invited speaker on physician engagement, large clinic employed physician-models, physician recruitment and retention, physician compensation models as well as the transformation of health care from volume-based to value-based structures. She also lectures nationally on her passion on physician engagement and leadership, medical education, risk management and professional liability, patient safety, medical error, communication and emotional intelligence.
