Dr. Gendelman’s Science Cafe draws crowd

Howard Gendelman, M.D., the Margaret R. Larson Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Chair in the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience, discussed the quest to find a cure for HIV at an Aug. 13 Science Cafe in Omaha. The presentation included discussion of Dr. Gendelman and his team’s work with Kamel Khalili, Ph.D., at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, to eliminate HIV — the virus responsible for AIDS — from living animals. Approximately 150 people attended the event, including longtime UNMC supporter Ruth Scott.

Dr. Meza appointed to NIH study section

Jane Meza, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for global and student engagement, was appointed to serve as a member of the Acute Neural Injury and Epilepsy Study Section, NIH Center for Scientific Review for a four-year term that began July 1 and will end on June 30, 2023. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

Event marks new medical humanities major

The UNMC community is invited to a celebration of the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s new major in medical humanities. The UNO Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Communication, Fine Arts and Media, will host the event at UNO’s Criss Library, in the first floor events space alongside the Osborne Gallery, from 4-5 p.m. on Aug. 22. David Boocker, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Michael Hilt, Ph.D., dean of the College of Communications, Fine Arts and Media, will attend the event, which will include remarks, refreshments and beverages.

Massage special offered at Center for Healthy Living

The massage therapist at the UNMC Center for Healthy Living is having a summer massage special: $50 for an hour massage. The special runs through Sept. 10. Contact Kristie at 402-391-1882 for more information. No Center for Healthy Living membership is required for purchase.

Dr. Ramos appointed to ISASH board

Athena Ramos, Ph.D., assistant professor in health promotion, Center for Reducing Health Disparities, UNMC College of Public Health, was named to the board of directors of the International Society for Agricultural Safety and Health during the organization’s annual conference in June.
