New faculty spotlight: Jordan Rowley, Ph.D.

Jordan Rowley, Ph.D.

Jordan Rowley, Ph.D., is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Jordan Rowley, Ph.D.
  • Hometown: Payson, Utah
  • Title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy

Research/professional interests: I am interested in the 3D organization of DNA within the nucleus. I aim to discover mechanisms that drive this organization to the point where we can predict the structure and functional consequences with high accuracy.

How I fell in love with chromatin biology: When I was an undergraduate, I had no idea what I wanted to do until I took a general biology course. While there have been many great advances, I felt impressed by the vast amount of knowledge we lack. Picking a particular field of study was difficult at first, but when I started my Ph.D., I found it fascinating that DNA modifications and chromatin structure affect so much of our health and daily life.

Degrees:

  • Ph.D., molecular biology, University of Michigan
  • Postdoctoral Fellow, Emory University, Atlanta
  • B.S., molecular biology, Brigham Young University

Memberships:

  • The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE)

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I grew up waterskiing every summer and got pretty good at it.
  • I played ultimate Frisbee in high school.
  • Between college and graduate school, I worked for a company performing paternity tests.
