UNMC and UNO are among the sponsors of Summer Sounds at Highlander, a community concert series presented by Omaha Performing Arts in partnership with Seventy Five North.
Free and open to the public, the family-friendly concerts are at the Highlander Accelerator’s community lawn at 2112 N. 30 St. The park opens for seating at 5 p.m., with the opening act at 6 p.m. and the main act at 7 p.m.
The series opens on Aug. 3, when the Marcus Lewis Quintet brings its Midwest-born jazz to Omaha. Lewis, with his famed trombone skills and his crew of skilled musicians from Kansas City, delivers upbeat tunes. Lewis has performed and/or recorded with such notable artists as Aretha Franklin, Prince, Janelle MonĂ¡e and Bruno Mars.
On Aug. 24, Mwenso & The Shakes! will perform a blend of blues, jazz and African and Afro-American music.
Concert attendees may bring blankets and chairs, sunscreen, bug spray, leashed pets and drinks (nonalcoholic and beer and wine). Food and nonalcoholic beverages will be available onsite for purchase.
