Dr. Barthold honored for work with residents

Claudia Barthold, M.D., residency program director for the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine, was recently awarded the Robert Wigton, M.D., Program Director of the Year by the Graduate Medical Education Office. Chandra Are, M.B.B.S., and Vicki Hamm presented the award to Dr. Barthold during the Emergency Medicine Residency Graduation and Alumni Dinner in June.

UNMC faculty/staff/students offered discount to Nelly concert at Baxter Arena

Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum selling artist Nelly is coming to the Baxter Arena on Oct. 17. He’ll be joined on this tour by Grammy-winning group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, multi-platinum selling artist and star of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta Yung Joc, platinum selling artist Mike Jones, and legendary group Do or Die.

UNMC and University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty, staff and students are eligible to receive $10 off any ticket purchase to this show. See the pricing map and the ticket order form. Future chef competition winner to visit Nebraska Cafe

Addie Borgman

Make plans to stop by the Nebraska Cafe, located on level three of University Tower, on Tuesday, July 23. You’ll find the young winner of the 2019 Sodexo Future Chef Competition offering samples of one of her recipes, Mini Mexi Meatball Boats. Addie Borgmann will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The dish will also be available for purchase at one of the chef action stations.

Borgmann is a sixth grader at Elkhorn Valley View Middle School in Elkhorn, Nebraska. She is actively involved in the Elkhorn Community Theatre, Girl Scouts, volleyball, and basketball. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading, art, dreaming of the Rocky Mountains, and her two cats; Tennyson and Bronco. Borgmann’s most exciting accomplishment this year was winning the 2019 Sodexo Future Chef Competition. She recently returned from New York City where she was able to spend time in the kitchen learning culinary tips and tricks from Chef Marc Murphy.

Race honors Jessica Nielsen, D.N.P., supports programming

Med center colleagues are planning to come out and support the first goTHRIVEon 5K, held in remembrance of former nursing faculty member Jessica Nielsen, D.N.P., at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at Standing Bear Lake.

“We are raising money to support what Jessica was passionate about to help others thrive on,” said Tiffany Moore, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC College of Nursing. Proceeds from the event will benefit a scholarship in the UNMC nurse practitioner program, Batten Disease research and Project Pink’d.

The event will begin and end at Billy O’s at 14242 Fort St. A mile walk starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K run/walk beginning at 9:15 a.m. Register here or, if you’d prefer not to attend, donate here. Online registration is $40 and includes a race shirt. Online registration is open through Aug. 3, and day-of-race registration will be available until 8:45 a.m. Day-of-race registration will be $35 cash, check or Paypal, but no shirt will be available to day-of-race registrants.

Shirt pickup will be on Sunday, August 18 from noon-5 p.m. at 7515 N. 155 Terrace, Bennington, or on the morning of the race. Proceeds will be paid to the Jessica Nielsen Foundation.

Jasmine Marcelin, M.D., to be featured in video

A film crew will come to Omaha the week of July 29-Aug. 2 to film a short video highlighting the work of Jasmine Marcelin, M.D., assistant professor, internal medicine-infectious diseases.

Dr. Marcelin is one of three members of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) who will be showcased on the 3-5 minute video that will air at the IDSA Breakfast during ID Week (Oct. 2-6) in Washington, D.C.

The main focus of Dr. Marcelin’s segment will be her commitment to IDSA’s new Diversity Task Force, her participation in the Faces of ID Campaign, and her passion for antimicrobial stewardship.

Carol Angle, M.D., honored by alma mater

Carol Angle, M.D., professor enerita of the UNMC College of Medicine and one of the nation’s foremost researchers on lead poisoning, will be honored by Wellesley College with a 2019 Alumnae Achievement Award. The college calls the awards “Wellesley’s highest accolades, given annually to graduates of distinction, who through their achievements, have brought honor to themselves and the college.” See more here.
