Women’s Center for Advancement honors UNMC’s Athena Ramos, Ph.D.
Athena Ramos, Ph.D., assistant professor in health promotion, Center for Reducing Health Disparities, UNMC College of Public Health, is among 10 women who will be honored June 13 at the Omaha Marriott-Capital District as part of the 32nd annual Tribute to Women Lunch for the Women’s Center for Advancement.
Since 1987, the Tribute to Women honor has been given to 300 amazingly talented and incredibly compassionate women who serve the Omaha community — women who led by example in helping women and girls lead safe, healthy, self-determined lives. Dr. Ramos will be recognized for her exceptional work in reducing health disparities among farmworkers and Latinos throughout the region.
She also is engaged in several community organizations — among them the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance and the Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition — and is the former president of the board of directors of the Immigrant Legal Center.

Human Genetics Laboratory leaders give presentations
Jennifer Sanmann, Ph.D., director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Human Genetics Laboratory, traveled to Hong Kong in May for the Association for Molecular Pathology’s Global 2019 Congress. There, Dr. Sanmann presented a talk and a poster titled, “High-Risk Cytogenetics in Multiple Myeloma: Further Scrutiny of Deletions within the IGH Gene Region Enhances Risk Stratification.”
The lab’s associate director, Bhavana Dave, Ph.D., presented and participated in a panel discussion on “Multimodal Assessment in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)” at the Leukemia Symposium: Focus on Opportunities to Improve Care, which was held at UNMC in May.
Congratulations Athena. A wonderful acknowledgement of your service to the community and the work you do. John Davis
This article left out that the multi-talented Dr. Ramos is also a funded Investigator in the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH). Wonderful to hear about this much-deserved honor!
