Research leaders at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine marked Clinical Trials Day, which was May 20, with words of appreciation for the med center’s research professionals.

According to the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), Clinical Trials Day is designed as “a well-deserved ‘time out’ to recognize the people who conduct clinical trials and to say ‘thanks’ for what they do every day to improve public health.

“This day of celebration also provides our community with a unique opportunity to raise awareness of clinical trials — and of clinical research as a career option — among the greater public,” the organization says on its website.

Med center leaders stressed the importance of clinical research to the med center’s academic and clinical missions.

“Our clinical trials and clinical research activities distinguish UNMC and Nebraska Medicine from other regional hospitals,” said James Linder, M.D., CEO of Nebraska Medicine. “Most importantly, we are able to offer clinical care that otherwise would not be available to the community.”

“A special thanks to all the team members who support our clinical trials and research,” said Harris Frankel, M.D., chief medical officer at Nebraska Medicine and associate professor of neurological sciences at UNMC. “We know your efforts advance our understanding of disease and the discovery of new therapies. Your dedication and hard work gives hope for improving the lives of many.”

“This is such a great time to recognize what an important role research plays in the advancement of medicine,” said LuAnn Larson, director of clinical research operations at UNMC. “We are all critical to that mission, and I appreciate the different roles that everyone plays in moving a study from start to finish. It is a huge endeavor, but the answer to that critical question of, ‘Will this improve our patients lives?’ is what everyone is here to help answer.”

“Clinical research is one of many ways that UNMC and Nebraska Medicine working together lead the world,” said Christopher Kratochvil, M.D., associate vice chancellor for clinical research at UNMC and vice president for research at Nebraska Medicine. “Thank you to all the members of the research team across our entire enterprise who make this happen, with a special thanks to the research participants.”
