The Veterans Affairs (VA) Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System is celebrating National VA Research Week this week, marking the 94th anniversary of VA research. The theme is “The Science of Hope,” highlighting VA research’s history of outstanding accomplishments that have improved veterans’ lives and advanced America’s medical knowledge.

“This year’s theme emphasizes the contributions of research findings into advancements in health care not only for Veterans’ but for everyone,” said John Davis, Ph.D., VA senior research career scientist and director of research and development for the Olson Center for Women’s Health in the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “This is a great time to highlight the ongoing productive collaborations between the Omaha VA and our academic affiliate UNMC.”
As a part of VA Research Week, the Omaha VA Medical Center will host a special research seminar at the Omaha VA honoring a prominent clinician scientist. The seminar will be given by James O’Dell, M.D., Stokes Shackleford Professor, vice chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, and chief of rheumatology at the Omaha VA Medical Center. The title of his presentation is “Circuitous but fortuitous career path with a major assist from the VA.” The seminar will take place Wednesday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the Omaha VA Education Conference Room.
Additionally, a morning series of oral and poster presentations highlighting current clinical, translational and basic science research will take place on Friday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. The oral presentations will begin at 9 a.m. in Room 1004 of the Durham Research Center at UNMC. A poster session with more than 20 posters will follow immediately in the atrium of the Durham Research Center. All VA and UNMC faculty, students and staff are encouraged to participate.
