MMI hosts social media expert Amie Konwinski
Social media expert Amie Konwinski, founder and CEO of the Smart Girl Society, was the guest of the MMI Department of Psychology in April, speaking at UNMC about child and adolescent use of social media, safety concerns, the digital “brand,” and how we can best help parents and kids navigate the digital world.

“We were so grateful to have Amie present to us,” said Tara Sjuts, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at MMI. “Her talk was eye-opening and informative, and it was very well-received. She definitely set the tone for the work we need to do with the families we serve, as well as our own families.”

The MMI Department of Psychology and the Smart Girl Society are partnering on research related to the use of social media by children and adolescents and the relationship of this use with factors of well-being.

“The psychology department is so excited to be collaborating with Amie and the Smart Girl Society on research, looking at the current climate of the digital world and the needs our children have in that world,” Dr. Sjuts said. “I think SGS is such a great community partner for MMI because we can inform one another on the difficulties kids are facing and what we can do to best help families.”

Sen. Deb Fischer mentions LEND program in newsletter
In her newsletter, Nebraska’s U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer mentioned meeting with members of MMI’s Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders (LEND) program during their trip to Washington, D.C.

“Fred and I had a great time welcoming the University of Nebraska Medical Center LEND program’s faculty and trainees during their visit to the Senate. I appreciate their dedication to people with developmental disabilities,” Sen. Fischer said.
