Pickleball available on ice rink through the summer

While previous summers have seen UNMC’s ice rink as a quiet space, this summer marks the return of the rink as a hotspot for activity and recreation on UNMC’s campus. That is because Pickleball has made the jump outdoors.

For the first time, UNMC’s ice rink will be home to two full Pickleball courts. The nets will be set up daily, Monday through Friday, for the members of the campus community to enjoy for free (weather permitting). Paddles and balls are also available, free-of-charge, to students and employees of the University of Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine. To check out equipment, stop by the Center for Healthy Living with your university or hospital ID badge.

About Pickleball
Pickleball is played by teams of two using a paddle and a lightweight, perforated, plastic ball. Imagine a combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton and you’ll start to get the picture. It’s a breeze for newcomers to learn and become competitive. Pickleball’s fun and social nature have led many to recognize it as exercise in disguise.

As a sport, it appeals to audiences young and old thanks in large part to the court size. The court’s surface is just large enough that speedy opponents can play at a fast pace, but small and manageable enough for slower, cerebral competitors. In Pickleball, players who have lost a step and can’t cover as much ground can still win by using their head without having to run as much. This broad appeal helps explain why NBC News has called Pickleball the fastest growing sport in America.

Want to get on your feet, get moving, and enjoy the weather during your lunch hour? Meet your co-workers on the rink for a few sets. Want to unwind after work? Stop by for a pick-up game. The courts will be open for drop-in and pick-up play all week long except during special events like the intramural Pickleball league (Wednesday evenings) and the UNMC farmers market (Tuesday afternoons in July).

If you have any questions or would like to be notified regarding upcoming drop-in, pick-up, or learn-to-play times, please contact the campus recreation coordinator or the Center for Healthy Living front desk at 402-559-5254.

This is great! Pickleball is so much fun to play, and a wonderful avenue to new friendships, fun and exercise! I am an office associate for the CON on the Scottsbluff campus. Several years ago a young man and his wife moved to our area to retire. He introduced a few ladies to the game, and it has now grown to 50+ players. I encourage everyone to check it out – if you haven't already.
