‘Do No Harm’ documentary draws strong turnout

Approximately 130 people (medical students, residents, fellows and physicians) turned out on April 23 to view the "Do No Harm" documentary produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Robyn Symon.

The film follows four individuals touched by physician suicide and also explores the complex health care system that impacts how physicians practice medicine and the environment for doctors in training. The film also focuses on solutions, including legislative reform, ending the stigma surrounding mental health treatment, and shining a light at the other end of the tunnel for suicidal doctors.

The documentary is 80 minutes long. Following the screening a 12-member panel participated in a question-and-answer session.

“I was very pleased with the response to the documentary,” said Steven Wengel, M.D., associate vice chancellor for campus wellness for UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. “It’s obviously a very sensitive subject, but I think everyone agreed that it’s the start of an important conversation that needs to continue.”
