Looking at U: Cara Mouw

Cara Mouw

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Cara Mouw
  • Hometown: Alton, Iowa
  • Number of years at UNMC: 19 years

Tell us about what you do here at UNMC.

I work in the UNMC College of Nursing (CON) dean’s office. I am the first point of contact, providing administrative support and customer service, coordinating deliveries and serving as traffic director for those who are lost. I handle building maintenance issues and special facilities projects and maintain records related to the nursing buildings as well as faculty records. I serve as the compliance representative and time/leave coordinator for all five divisions of the CON. A portion (.25 FTE) of my time is designated for providing support to the director of evaluation, including processing data related to surveys and reports, as well as all aspects of accreditation — from progress reports to actual site visits.

“Excellence” is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed excellence in practice at UNMC.
Last spring, representatives from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) came for an accreditation site visit and reviewed all of the college’s nursing programs. I witnessed excellence as a team made up of College of Nursing faculty and staff took on tasks to prepare for the site visit, including educating our faculty, staff and students regarding the purpose, value and importance of accreditation. I continue to witness excellence as process improvement and development of innovative ideas have occurred since the site visit. Notification of full 10-year accreditation came from CCNE last fall — I don’t think you can get more excellent than that!

What is your favorite spring activity?
Working in the yard — doing away with the dead brown of winter to prepare for the bright colors of spring.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I got a real estate license when I was 20 years old.
  • My least favorite color is red (AND I’m an Iowa Hawkeye fan).
  • I worked in the window coverings industry for 15 years before coming to UNMC, and my husband has been in the window coverings industry for 30 years. We own All About Blinds in Omaha and Nebraska City — check us out on the UNMC Employee Discount page (under Miscellaneous).
