Dr. Kelly Cawcutt and Dr. Jasmine Marcelin are members of a group of women physicians called PROWD – "Promoting and Respecting Our Women Doctors", led by Dr. Julie Silver, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Silver is the creator of the #BeEthical Campaign, which is a strategic initiative to reduce workforce inequity by focusing on metrics and data analysis and intentional pursuit of opportunities to close gaps.
Drs. Cawcutt and Marcelin are champions for equity in medicine, particularly in our department of medicine and in the specialty Infectious Diseases. It was through their connection with Dr. Silver that Dr. Cawcutt and Dr. Marcelin shared the #BeEthical Campaign with the chief residents, Drs. Hajek, Brittan & Winter, and suggested that they incorporate this into their women in medicine events. Both Drs. Cawcutt and Marcelin attended the Harvard Women’s Leadership Conference last fall and encourage our trainees to consider attending this event. They also encouraged our chief residents to sharing their women in medicine initiative which began last fall as an abstract to an upcoming conference sponsored by Mayo Clinic in September where both Dr. Cawcutt and Dr. Marcelin will be speaking (GRIT [Growth, Resilience, Inspiration & Tenacity] for Women in Medicine). Both Dr. Cawcutt and Marcelin are leaders in social networking and have advertised these women in medicine events on social media.
Chief residents, Drs. Hajek, Brittan & Winter, continue championing the IM women faculty and to create networking events at UNMC. The first two events, held in the fall/winter of 2018, were focused on networking and career advancement. The third event, being held on May 8th, will be to review present women in leadership and analyzing information related to them as women in medicine. They will also be looking at the best options for social networking to continue the growth of the group. Invitations are for attending physicians, fellows, residents, as well as M3 and M4s. The 2019-2020 IM Chief residents will be the leaders for the next year as well and they are excited to continue the initiative. There will be 2-3 events planned per year on the UNMC campus. The #BeEthical campaign also provides an event November 14-16 in New York City, called She Leads – Healthcare.
