Nebraska Science Festival highlights in Omaha-metro area

The seventh annual Nebraska Science Festival – presented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center – runs throughout the month of April and includes an array of science- and technology-related activities in 20 communities across the state.
 
With more than 100+ SciFest activities, there is something for every age and interest. Visit libraries for a variety of STEM activities, track a weather balloon, sample fermented beverages, and discover a STEM career. You’ll find the entire festival schedule (with details and registration links) on www.nescifest.com. Here are a few activities of interest in the Omaha-metro area:
 
Fontenelle Elementary Space Demo – April 5, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Students will build a water bottle rocket containing a space capsule holding an eggstronaut (egg). Over 100 water rocket launches at Fontenelle Elementary in Omaha. The public is invited to see whether the eggstronauts land safely.
 
Metropolitan Community College Science Day – April 6, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Stop by MCC’s South Omaha Campus, Mahoney building for six rooms of hands-on activities, which encompass a variety of science disciplines including physics, chemistry and biology.
 
UNO STEM University – April 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Experts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha will conduct hands-on workshops for students in grades 2-12. Along with the workshops, which require registration, students can move through open interactive stations in Roskens Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
 
Women’s Fund of Omaha Presents: Adult Sex Ed – April 14, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Join the Women’s Fund of Omaha as they convene a panel of sexual health experts at OutrSpaces, 1258 S. 13th St., in Omaha. Panelists are prepared to answer your written or verbal questions on a variety of topics. Free admission.
 
Balloon Launch – April 16, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Omaha Public School Science sponsored high altitude balloon launch will take place at 9 a.m. at the main TAC parking lot near 30th and Cuming Streets. Free.
 
Bugs & Bourbon – April 17, 7 to 8 p.m.
Learn the science of bourbon and then talk about bugs with University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educators. Attendees can purchase a sampler and taste along at this 21 and older event at Mercury Omaha, 329 S. 16th St., No. 3, in Omaha. Free, but reservations are required.
 
Kennedy STEAM Night – April 18, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
STEAM Night at Kennedy Elementary School highlights careers, real-world examples and community organizations that use Science, Technology, Engineering, Art (language arts/literacy, visual arts and performing arts) and Mathematics. Interactive displays and activities will be set up for families. In addition, Wildlife Encounters, The Omaha Zoo, Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha Stormwater, Prairie STEM, Omaha Public Library, Hot Shops and others will be on hand to show how science concepts exist in the world outside school and integrate with technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
 
Lil Scientist Day – April 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Omaha Children’s Museum will host fun activities, such as making volcanos and UV bracelets, and science shows to help your little scientist explore scientific concepts. Members, free; under 24 months, free; kids 2-15, $13; adults, 16-59, $13; seniors, 60+, $12.
 
Women in Science: Omaha Science Café, “Law, Ethics and Impact of ‘Right to Try Movement’ – April 23, 7 to 8 p.m.
Join the Nebraska Coalition for Livesaving Cures at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. in Omaha, as they welcome Beth E. Roxland, J.D., M.Bioethics, Senior Consultant on Law, Policy and Ethics at Roxland Consultants, Ltd. Free admission.
 
McMillan Magnet Middle School Project Based Learning Night – April 24, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
McMillan students will lead hands-on activities and STEM demonstrations during the open house. Attendees will be able to tour and learn about the variety of STEM projects students have created including: robotics, science fair and coding. Free.
 
Free Public Science Expo – April 27, 9 a.m. to noon
Participate in fun and engaging hands-on learning opportunities at The Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St. In addition, the Omaha Children’s Museum will perform their "Mad Scientist Show" at 10:30 a.m. Free.
 
Omaha Public Libraries has more than 20 events scheduled throughout April at libraries across the city.
 
Presented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Nebraska Science Festival is a collaboration of organizations and individuals interested in the advancement of science literacy.
