How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:
Cardiology fellowship is three years. This is my sixth year at UNMC having completed my internal medicine residency here. 2019-2020 will be my seventh year when I complete an advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant fellowship
What do you like the most about your training program:
I like the variety of experiences cardiology provides me. From direct patient care on several different services and cardiac imaging to procedures in the cath lab and participating in research. You get to do a little of everything in cardiology.
What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:
I think continuing to understand and optimizing house office wellness while still offering exceptional educational opportunities and adequate patient care experiences is a challenge that GME and ACGME will need to continue address in the years to come.
List some accomplishments that you are proud of:
- My first-ever accomplishment was being the first baby born in Shenandoah, Iowa, in 1986, but I didn’t really do very much work for that.
- Marrying my amazing wife and having three great kids.
- Attending numerous conferences to present my research and network with others in the field.
Tell us three things about you that others may not know:
- I starred in a short film some friends created for a 48-hour film festival while in med school.
- I have perfected the best chocolate chip cookie.
- My life’s mission is to become Tom Hanks’ best friend.
