This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC’s 2018 Scientist Laureate, Distinguished Scientist, Research Leadership and New Investigator Award recipients.
The Distinguished Scientist Award
The Distinguished Scientist Award — which is sponsored by the chancellor — recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.
- Name: Scot Ouellette, Ph.D.
- Title: Associate professor, UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology
- Joined UNMC: 2017
- Hometown: Peripatetic
Research focus:
Microbiology
The goal of my research is: To better understand the basic physiology and microbiology of the unique bacterial pathogen, Chlamydia.
My research will make a difference because: We may identify new targets for drug development that are Chlamydia-specific. This would eliminate effects of broad-spectrum antibiotics on normal flora and specifically eliminate Chlamydia. Chlamydia is the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections, and new infections continue to increase across Douglas County and the U.S.
The best advice I’ve ever been given is: To join UNMC!
Three things you may not know about me are:
- People spell my first name incorrectly all the time.
- People spell my surname incorrectly all the time.
- I’m used to having people spell my name incorrectly.
Scot, way to go! congratulations, well deserved to an awesome scientist and even better collaborator (and by the way, I still misspell both, your name and last name)
Martin
Got the same problems with my first name and surname. Also got used to it. Congratulations!
