New investigator: Sushil Kumar, Ph.D.

Sushil Kumar, Ph.D.

This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC’s 2018 Scientist Laureate, Distinguished Scientist, Research Leadership and New Investigator Award recipients.

The New Investigator Award

New Investigator Awards go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources.
New Investigators also had to demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and/or presenting their findings at national conventions.

  • Name: Sushil Kumar, Ph.D.
  • Title: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
  • Joined UNMC: January 2009
  • Hometown: Ropar, Punjab, India

Research focus:

  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Pancreatitis

The goal of my research is: Mechanistic understanding of pancreatic cancer progression and therapeutic targeting.

My research will make a difference because: Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease and poised to become the second leading cause of cancer-related mortalities by the year 2030 in the United States. This grim outlook is due to lack of diagnostic markers and therapeutic options. We are developing novel modalities for concurrent targeting of pancreatic cancer cells and tumor stroma.

The best advice I’ve ever been given is:

Stay true to yourself and learn from your mistakes.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I always wanted to fly an airplane.
  • I enjoy cooking for my family and friends.
  • I love to play tennis and baseball with my kids.
