Med students, UNMC to thank residents

Medical students might suffer from hand cramps from writing nearly 500 thank you notes, but it will be worth the effort tomorrow when residents open their mailboxes to find tokens of appreciation.

As part of National Thank Our Resident Day, UNMC residents will receive a hand written note, a special poem written in their honor and a cookie, all due to the efforts of members of UNMC’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). The poem, written by Kelly Cawcutt, M.D., assistant professor, infectious diseases, acknowledges how hard residents work.

“It’s important that residents know they are appreciated,” said Charity Evans, M.D., associate professor, surgery, and co-advisor for the honor society.

Reminders of how much they are appreciated will be flashed on TV monitors throughout campus all day and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., refreshments and snacks will be served in Private Dining Room C.

Since its inception in 2014, the GHHS chapter at UNMC has grown to nearly 100 members. Each member has a responsibility to model, support and advocate for compassionate, patient-centered care throughout their careers.

Feb. 28 has been recognized as “House Officer Appreciation Day” on our campus and other events are being held on that day to thank the house officers for their tireless work and dedication.
