Brian Boerner, M.D., has been named the director of UNMC’s Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE). Dr. Boerner, an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, received his M.D. from UNMC in 2006, then completed his internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at UNMC. He was inducted as a member of the IAE in 2017.
Dr. Boerner has vast experience in program and curricular development and has provided leadership for the endocrinology fellowship educational and research experiences. Most recently, he co-developed and co-directed the new Clinical Educator Enhanced Medical Education Track (EMET) for UNMC medical students. For his continual efforts and dedication to education, Dr. Boerner has received the department of internal medicine’s Top Teacher Award for six consecutive years.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Boerner to the faculty affairs team as director of the IAE,” said Kari Simonsen, M.D., interim assistant vice chancellor for faculty affairs. “His educational leadership in graduate and undergraduate medical education and position as co-director of the EMET program for students interested in becoming medical educators will serve him well as he takes on his new, well-deserved role.”
Geoffrey Talmon, M.D., founding director of the IAE, stepped down to move forward in his new role as assistant dean for medical education in the UNMC College of Medicine.
“The academy also would like to recognize and thank Dr. Talmon, who served for three years as the founding director,” Dr. Simonsen said. “His vision for the academy and enthusiastic leadership provided a solid foundation for moving forward into the next phase of the IAE’s development. We are excited to see Dr. Boerner apply his passion and leadership to continue the expansion and collaboration of IAE initiatives at UNMC.”
“The academy is so fortunate to have many inspired and accomplished educators, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with these individuals,” Dr. Boerner said of his new position. “Dr. Talmon and the IAE leadership team have established many outstanding programs to the benefit of educators, learners and clinicians at UNMC and other campuses, as well as in the community. I look forward to continuing to develop these programs while collaborating with IAE members and others to encourage continued growth.”
Congratulations Dr. Boerner!
