On December 13th, six students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) completed their three-month clinical rotations at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. These students rotated through several clinics such as clinical neurology, anatomical pathology, oncology/hematology, and others. During these rotations, the students were able to receive first-hand experiences of American clinical care techniques and services.
During their graduation ceremony on the 13th, the students presented on their time here at UNMC and in Omaha. The students highlighted the differences between clinical rotations at UNMC and at SJTUSM, everything from how rounds are conducted to the number of didactics during the rotation. Their presentation also touched on their observations of doctors in the United States. There were also several highlights about their time exploring Omaha, including sampling Omaha's diverse selection of restaurants and their interactions with people at UNMC and Omaha, interactions that they will continue to cherish long after their time here.
Gerald Moore, MD, senior associate dean for academic affairs at the College of Medicine attended their graduation and gave closing remarks. He praised the students' enthusiasm and dedication to learning during their rotations. Dr. Moore also spoke of his own experiences visiting SJTUSM and expressed excitement about the experiences the students gained and will now take back to China.
The clinical medicine student exchange with SJTUSM started in 2005. This was the 14th group of SJTUSM students coming to UNMC for clinical rotations. There will be seven UNMC medical students traveling to China for clinical rotations in February and March of this year.
