Concert, menu items kick off Black History Month

Nebraska Medicine's own Millicent Crawford will be performing during the Gospel Fest Celebration.

UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha will mark Black History Month with several events, and soul food offerings in the Nebraska and Clarkson Cafes, beginning today with the second annual UNMC/UNO Gospel Fest Celebration, which will be held in the Durham Outpatient Center atrium from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The program will feature recording artists TaRae Peoples and Millicent Crawford, keyboardist Robert Dancer, actress TammyRa Jackson and singer Janet Ashley.

On Feb. 12, a Black History Month trivia challenge will be published in UNMC Today. The challenge will award prizes, donated by the UNMC Bookstore, to three people chosen at random from among those who answer all the questions correctly.

On Feb. 13, CityMatCH will present a session on how inequities impact the health of a community, what the organization does in Omaha and other key projects. The program will be presented from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Eppley Auditorium.

CityMatCH is a national Maternal and Child Health organization dedicated to addressing inequities in communities, how they impact health outcomes, and what the organization does to affect change.

On Feb. 21, local author Charlene Butts Ligon will read and discuss her novel, “Fearless,” the story of the life and activism of Evelyn Butts of Norfolk, Va. The program will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Eppley Science Hall.
