The Nebraska Medicine Board of Directors have announced three new board members: Mark Rupp, M.D., UNMC professor and president of the medical staff for Nebraska Medicine; David W. Mercer, M.D., chair of the UNMC Department of Surgery, and Eric Keen, chief executive officer, HDR.
Dr. Mercer joined Nebraska Medicine and UNMC in 2009, when he was hired as a surgeon and chair of the UNMC Department of Surgery. He is trained in gastrointestinal surgery and trauma and critical care. Prior to joining Nebraska Medicine and UNMC, Dr. Mercer served as professor and vice chair of surgery for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston (UTMSH).
Dr. Rupp is an infectious disease specialist at Nebraska Medicine, chief of the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases; medical director, infection control and epidemiology; associate medical director, antimicrobial stewardship, and professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. His board position is as the president of the Nebraska Medicine medical staff, and he succeeds George Greene, M.D., who had served in that role previously.
Keen became CEO of HDR in 2017 and serves as the chair for the HDR Board of Directors. He previously served as president and chief operating officer and engineering company president at the engineering firm, based in Omaha. He has spent his 36-year career helping develop and deliver some of the United States’ most notable transportation infrastructure projects, including the Hoover Dam Bypass.
Dr. Mercer and Keen fill the seats on the Nebraska Medicine Board of Directors that were vacant due to previous board members James Linder, M.D., and Carl Smith, M.D., being appointed chief executive officer, and chief academic officer, respectively, at Nebraska Medicine. Dr. Rupp joins the board by virtue of his leadership role as president of the medical staff.

Gold, M.D., chair of the Nebraska Medicine board and chancellor of UNMC and UNO. “These new members’ knowledge and experience in medicine, business and strategic vision will strengthen our board and help chart the course for the future.”
While representative of the economy in Omaha, sure lacks any diversity.
I'm sure these are all qualified individuals but the lack of diversity is very evident. Only 2 women and an all white board?
