Dr. Khan serves on GOARN steering committee for WHO

Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., participates in the GOARN steering committee meeting in Geneva earlier this month.

Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the College of Public Health, recently returned from Geneva where he attended his first meeting as a member of the steering committee of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN).

UNMC was selected as one of only 20 global institutions to serve on the committee. UNMC is a member of GOARN, a source of expert consultants for United Nations (UN) agencies.

In this role, Dr. Khan is responsible for implementation and evaluation of all global responses for the next four years. Until recently, he has been the only person from UNMC who has been deployed by GOARN to help in an international health crisis.

“UNMC is committed to leading the world in transforming lives to create a healthy future for all individuals and communities. I’m proud that Dr. Khan represents UNMC on this committee that addresses international health care issues.”

UNMC Chancellor

“I’m humbled that I will be UNMC’s representative member on the committee,” Dr. Khan said. “It’s an honor that we were selected and a great opportunity to share our expertise to help improve global epidemic preparedness and responses.”

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., said that this appointment once again demonstrates UNMC’s global leadership role.

“UNMC is committed to leading the world in transforming lives to create a healthy future for all individuals and communities. I’m proud that Dr. Khan represents UNMC on this committee that addresses international health security issues.”

Dr. Khan was one of 33 applicants submitted by more than 200 partner institutions in the global network. UNMC joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Tulane University, New Orleans, as the only institutions representing the entire United States on the committee.

The committee takes on the challenge of realizing the GOARN 2.0 goals and, in doing so, strengthens the leadership of the network in the global public health arena. The committee has a key role in providing strategic guidance, prioritizing activities and providing practical support to these activities; and engaging new stakeholders and initiatives to ensure the sustainability of the network.
