COM Curriculum Committee approves conflict of interest policy

Geoff Talmon, MD

In an effort to ensure that the learning environment for UNMC medical students is as constructive and supportive as possible, the College of Medicine Curriculum Committee has approved a conflict of interest (COI) policy.

"It is important for the educator-learner relationship not to be influenced by potential conflicts of interest such as consensual intimate, familial, physician-patient, or financial relationships," said Geoff Talmon, M.D., assistant dean for medical education.

The document will help students and faculty avoid and manage COIs that may arise, he said. These COIs could unduly impact student grading, academic advancement, or the awarding of special awards such as scholarships or other special recognition, he added.

The policy can be found here.
