“The Impact of Cultural Competency in the Global Clinic” will be the focus of three Oct. 24 presentations with Benjamin LaBrot, M.D., founder and CEO of Floating Doctors.

“The work of Floating Doctors is quite impressive,” said Sara Pirtle, program manager for UNMC’s International Health and Medical Education. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our UNMC community to get a chance to hear Dr. LaBrot present on our campus.”
The Oct. 24 presentations include:
- 9-10 a.m. — Dr. LaBrot will present an overview of Floating Doctors, as well as discuss how they improve public health and how UNMC can engage with the organization. The session will be in the Maurer Center for Public Health, Room 1001.
- Noon to 1 p.m. — Dr. LaBrot will review common, but often unexpected cultural issues that arise during consults across wide religious, ethnic, geographic, language and socio-economic gulfs. The session will be in the Sorrell Center, Room 2014, and is available via Zoom.
- 1:45-2:45 p.m. — The UNMC Office of Community Engagement and the Student Association for Global Health will host a reception in the Sorrell Center, Room 4024, to discuss international outreach projects with Dr. LaBrot and gain insights about his experiences in the field.
The sessions are presented by the Office of Community Engagement, in collaboration with the Student Association for Global Health, the Center for Reducing Health Disparities and Primary Care Progress.
