A memorial tribute for Bruce Buehler, M.D., former director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute and chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in the Linder Reading Room in the Sorrell Center on the UNMC Omaha campus.
MMI will be hosting the tribute to Dr. Buehler, who died Sept. 19 at the age of 75.
“The legacy of Bruce Buehler will never be forgotten,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “It was his leadership that took the Munroe-Meyer Institute to the next level. Bruce traveled across the state countless times providing his expertise to children with developmental disabilities and their families. He made a huge difference for these families by bringing the services to them and not making them have to come to Omaha.”
Dr. Buehler came to UNMC in 1981 to become the director of genetics and, eventually, the Munroe-Meyer Institute. In 1994, Dr. Buehler also was appointed the chairman of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Buehler stepped down as pediatrics chairman and MMI director in 2007 — a 24-year term as MMI’s second director and a 16-year tenure as pediatrics chair.
Colleagues say he left his mark in both places.
“MMI is the house that Bruce has built, we stand on his shoulders, his grand vision and achievements. We will continue the torch that he has lit and make him proud,” said MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D.
Several campus leaders will be on hand to share their memories of Dr. Buehler. In addition, anyone in the audience who wishes to speak at the event will be given the opportunity.

He cared about people. I know that for some time he worked hard to keep Dr. Charles Andrew's morale up by taking him out to lunch regularly. Rosalee Yeaworth, PhD, RN, Dean Emeritus, UNMC College of Nursing
