Ellyn Ogden will give the 2018 Berggren Lecture at noon on Wednesday in the UNMC College of Public Health, Room 3013.
Ogden will speak on “Polio: Getting to Zero,” touching on topics such as data surveillance, epidemiology and communications, understanding communities, conflict resolution, working in fragile states and challenging assumptions.
Ogden is the worldwide polio eradication coordinator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and a senior technical advisor for health and child survival. Responsible for the agency’s $59 million annual polio eradication program and related immunization and disease control efforts, Ogden serves more than 25 countries in Africa, South Asia, and the Near East.
She fosters close linkages between organizations working on polio and broader child health problems, directing special attention to children in conflict countries and among marginalized or underserved communities.
A graduate of Tulane University (B.A., international relations) and the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (M.P.H., epidemiology and infectious disease control), Ogden has more than 25 years of international public health experience in the areas of child survival, disease prevention and control, health communication, and health and human rights.
Lunch will be provided for the first 100 attendees.
There also will be a series of roundtables Wednesday and Thursday in conjunction with the lecture, featuring Ogden and public health veterans Gretchen Berggren, M.D., Centers for Disease Control epidemiologist David Newberry, and Carol Swarts, M.D. Topics include:
