Janice Twiss, Ph.D., a nurse practitioner and UNMC alumna, will speak from 3-4 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the Center for Nursing Science, Room 3030, on “A Woman’s Health Career: Memories, Milestones, Mission.”
Dr. Twiss will be delivering the UNMC College of Nursing Alumni Council’s Distinguished Alumnus Award Lecture during UNMC Alumni Reunion Weekend.
During the lecture, she will discuss historical changes that have impacted both infant and maternal mortality, how research has impacted women’s health issues, and specific needs for the future in women’s health.
Dr. Twiss earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNMC in 1965. From 1965 to 1976, she served as an instructor in diploma schools of nursing in Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota and Michigan. In 1976, she returned to UNMC to begin her now 42-year career. She was an instructor at the Lincoln division and, after completing her master’s degree from UNMC in 1979, she joined the Omaha division, where she continues to teach today.
In 1989, she completed her Ph.D. in adult education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and in 1995 she added a post master’s certificate as a women’s health nurse practitioner at the University of Texas, El Paso.
In the UNMC College of Nursing, she currently serves as an associate professor and is the coordinator of the Woman’s Health Advanced Practice Graduate Nursing Program, where she teaches in the clinical courses. She also is a project advisor for several graduate students in the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program.
She was a co-investigator on a National Institute of Nursing Research federally funded grant focused in “Prevention of Osteoporosis in Breast Cancer Survivors” and has conducted other research around perimenopausal and menopausal women. She also has served as a women’s health advanced practice registered nurse at Nebraska Medicine’s Fontenelle Clinic in Omaha for the past 23 years.
